Installing Ferm-rite Barrel Bungs
Since the recently pressed wines are going through malolactic fermentation, C02 may pop a barrel bung. If a bung is missing, one runs the risk of oxidation and losing several thousands of dollars of wines.
Today, Kiara replaced the solid bungs in my Zin and Pinot barrels with Ferm-Rite breathable bungs. This clever invention provides a way for the C02 to escape without allowing in oxygen and provides peace of mind.
The benefits of breathable bungs include:
- Ferm-Rite bungs stay in place.
- No more bungs on the floor.
- Unique two-piece design makes for easy sanitation.
- No more cracked staves around bung holes.
- The bungs work year-round.
- Keeps wine safe from fruit flies & foreign objects, increasing the lifetime of costly filters.
Now, I can sleep easier at night.
